One more practice before Beast

The teams of GTA Rollergirls ventured forth down to Montreal with high hopes and expectations. After all, the Debutantes had a taste of previous victories and redemption at Beast of the East, and for the Chrome Mollys it was their first chance to taste tournament competition. Also to be noted as well, the Debutantes had already had the pleasure of two tune-up matches to turn up the volume in their play in April against Rideau Valley Slaughters and La Racaille back to back over two consecutive weekends. GTAR had at least an inkling of what was to come.

As intense as the competition and the atmosphere was to be at Beast within the confines of the arena, the Debutantes had to wake up at the crack of dawn to open the tournament and face their first match of the day. Les Duchesses from Roller Derby Quèbec were a somewhat unknown commodity but as a team were definitely a fun loving bunch. Pelvis Stojko their spokesperson had relayed that the bout with the Debutantes would be their first official match.

Final score 62-29. Filles du Roi.

Now to the story behind the story.

We’ve garnered some post Beast stories from some of the Debutantes who sallied forth to Montreal and while most will remain untold, they have shared some for the record. Derby Debutantes’s veteran 5By5 Lee Way Wreck’Em was in her third Beast as the gifted and speedy jammer and blocker of the team. Lee Way provided some analysis and retrospective of the Derby Debutantes and Chrome Mollys at Beast along with other insights into some of the other bouts at Beast from the Debutantes point de vue.

[Now onto Beast of the East 2011]

GAME 1 – DERBY DEBUTANTES VS. DUCHESSES DE QUÉBEC

[The Debutantes at the crack of dawn Derby time were the first match of the Saturday. Game 1 – 8 a.m. Their opposition les Duchesses de Québec playing in their first game.]

5by5 Lee Way Wreck’em: “For the first game, Debs vs Les Duchesses, it was Les Duchesses first game ever. We’re a more experienced team and were able to keep control of the pack for the game. We made a new Beast record for biggest point spread…until the Mollys played!”

[The Debutantes back in Toronto two weeks ago faced off against La Racaille for the first time, and got off to a quick start building a 32 to 5 lead. Things would be different this time around between the Montreal team in green and sparkles on their numbers and the Debutantes in their red and black.]

GAME 9 – LA RACAILLE vs. DERBY DEBUTANTES
Says 5by5: “I was talking to Tempting Fate [who is La Racaille] before the game and she said La Racaille were going to be much more awake from the start of the game unlike when they came to play us. They certainly were!”

[The match which started after lunchtime around 1:20 was a complete turnaround as La Racaille with a larger roster than seen in Toronto put down the pedal on the metal from the get-go. Greta Bobo, Izzy Skellington, Squarrior on jammer and walls of doom.]

5by5: “Penalties killed us in our second game, we had a jammer in the box for too much of the game, including me. La Racaille didn’t get sent to the box nearly as much and the strategy we had going into the game had to be changed midway through since it wasn’t working for us.”

[Final score: La Racaille 100 Derby Debutantes 8]

GAME 4 10:00 a.m. FILLES DU ROI 13 VS DEATH TRACK DOLLS 47
5by5: “Against the Dolls Les Filles Du Roi were getting passed on the left and generally were not together on the track.”

GAME 12 TOTAL KNOCKOUTS 0 FILLES DU ROI 81
5by5: “FDR woke up by the next game and were back to being a more dominant force (even with rookies Montreal’s teams are still pretty strong) and owned the pack.”

GAME 17 6:40 P.M. DERBY DEBUTANTES 29 vs. FILLES DU ROI 62
5by5: “Then we faced them. They had pack control and were able to form walls. At one point I had 3 of them in front of me saying “is she there? ok, hit her!” They were a very different team by that point in the tournament.”

GAME 14 4:40 P.M. CHROME MOLLYS 10 GORE GORE ROLLERGIRLS 131
“The Mollys scored their first points against the Gores after being completely shut out by the Contrabanditas. The Mollys game against the Ditas set a new Beast record for biggest point spread, so we unfortunately lost our record to our leaguemates! The Mollys were staying pretty close together, almost all of them had their first games at the Beast (the Krow and eSkimo Jo played last season) so they did pretty well. The biggest thing for them is to learn to look around more and that will come with more experience.”

GAME 28 SUNDAY 5 P.M. SLAUGHTER DAUGHTERS 87 GORE GORE ROLLERGIRLS 85
“The final game with the Daughters and Gores came down to who was able to penalty kill better. They’re both strong teams, the Gores are pretty fast while the Daughters, who also have fast jammers, are great at pack formation and are a very physical team. The game was a nail biter right to the very last jam.”

GAME 5 10:40 A.M. VICIOUS DISHES 50 GORE GORE ROLLERGIRLS 48
“Another nail biter of a game was the Dishes vs Gores. It came down to a jammer penalty at the end, the game had been pretty exciting to watch as the lead kept changing on the scoreboard.”

GAME 27 SUNDAY 4 P.M. DEATH TRACK DOLLS 42 CHICKS AHOY 31
“The biggest upset of the tournament though has to be the Dolls taking 3rd over the Chicks. Most ToRD games have had fairly predictable endings over the last couple of years, but the Dolls really brought everything they had in that game. The Chicks beat the Dolls earlier in the tournament, so it goes to show that anything can happen in this sport!”

From Sasha Fierce, we get another Debutantes birds eye view of Beast.“This year was my first year at The Beast. It was quite the experience – from veteran teams to freshies in their first games, it was great to watch and play against ladies in this sport I love.”

SASHA FIERCE before SOCIAL CLASS CLASH WITH LA RACAILLE

“My most recent “ah-ha” moment came watching footage from The Debs game vs. La Racaille from 3 weeks ago. I noticed I wan’t moving my feet very quickly – few lateral moves – and was taking a long time before deciding to move from the front of the pack to the back to help a teammate who was trapped behind enemy lines. I tried to improve upon those points at this tournament. I have A LOT from bruises from trial and error, but [after] watching the game footage, I think I made some headway.

“My biggest take-away (aside from a sweet pair of lift and separate shorts from the Neon Skates stall) is that you’re never done learning. As a newer player to the Debs (one year ago), I look for leadership from the veterans. I also know there are even newer girls who are looking to me. Watching games at this tournament, I can see that same pattern in a larger team sense – there are freshie teams who look up to teams like the Debs at the same time the Debs look up to teams like the Daughters. It was great to see the camaraderie between teams and players and coaches; everyone is there to have a fun time and learn as much as they can.”

Our proverbial summation from GTA President and Debutantes captain Splat Benatar:

“I believe that The Beast is a great tournament to help your teams tune up for their season. For the Beast 2011, I was so proud of our teams and how they fought it out on the track. They played against many tough teams. The Ditas and Gores for the Mollys and La Racaille and the Filles for the Debs.
“We learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses of our two teams which can help us develop as we play more games together. We were also so proud of the Slaughter Daughters and their great victory at the Beast. Congrats Daughters!”
